According to music industry folks, at
the time of her death, "She was such a
friend to songwriters. She always had an
open ear and door for the songwriters,
no matter who they were." "Maggie cared
so much for the business of songwriting;
she was passionate about it"
Maggie arrived in this world on
September 1, 1918 in Nashville,
Tennessee. Maggie left us on March
24, 1996, but anyone who knew her could
not forget her.
Maggie
attended Hume
Fogg High School in
Nashville and later, during her
amazing career, she accomplished the
following - here are only a few of her
career milestones:
¨
1967
- Founded Nashville Songwriters
Association (later called the Nashville
Songwriters Association International (NSAI);
she also became its first executive
director
¨
1970
Started running Maggie Cavender
Enterprises
¨
Her
first job in Nashville was with Pamper
Music and then she worked for
producer-songwriter-publisher Jack
Clement
¨
For a
while, Maggie worked at CMA, helping to
coordinate the first awards show
¨
Maggie also worked for music magnate
Shelby Singleton
¨
She
became administrator of Maypop
Music/Alabama Band Music
¨
Maggie was a promoter of industry
interests. She played a key role, for
example, in the revision of copyright
laws in 1978, which extended rights to
the life of the author plus 50 years. It
also raised royalties.
